YOUNGSTERS from two south Devon schools raced to the finish of a Tour of Britain cycling stage on Monday.
Former Olympic cyclist Colin Lewis joined pupils from Bovey Tracey and Ilsington primary schools, in preparation for the tour’s first visit to the area since 2013.
The event was also part of a new initiative to get younger children involved with sport.
Only one in three children are physically active every day, and Devon County Council are using this year’s tour to try and change that.
Two-time UK road race champion Lewis joined students on the climb up Haytor, the only summit finish on the 2016 Tour.
Before reaching the summit, some of the world’s best riders will need to conquer the roads of Haldon Forest, Chudleigh and Bovey Tracey.
A yodel sprint stage on Fore Street, Chudleigh is sure to enhance the excitement even further.
Mr Lewis, who lives in Bovey Tracey, said: ‘It’s fantastic that the tour is once again going through Devon and Bovey Tracey.
‘Last time in 2013 there were more than 20,000 people viewing the Tour on Haytor and many of them were young.
‘Here in town we have a new bike shop and cafe where young people meet.
‘I have no doubt that this facility, combined with the race, will inspire even more to take up the sport.’
The stage, pictured left, is due to take place on Friday, September 9.
