KINGSTEIGNTON

KINGSTEIGNTON Bowls Club ladies were invited to Marldon for their SDLBL clash on July 22.

In fine conditions, it finished 67-48 to Marldon (8-2pts). T Cornelius 19, Elly Riley 21; T Cartwright 30, Jackie Carr 10, P Edwards 18, Margaret Sole 17.

KBC captain Margaret Sole said we achieved what we wanted to today by getting two points at least, playing away on Marldon’s lawn. KBC’s Elly Riley skipped for the first time in the ladies league and won her rink. Evidently the green played very well and KBC’s captain was well pleased.

The following day, the men’s over-55s team headed to Bovey Tracey in the Y Division. 39-29 to Bovey Tracey (8-0 pts). A Franklin 21, Martin Redfern 14; R Bailey 18, Bill Beech 15.

KBC captain Bill Beech said the conditions were ideal as it wasn’t too hot and the match was hard fought. On the Franklin/Redfern rink, KBC never managed to edge ahead in spite of bowling some very good woods.

Skipper Beech up against R Bailey fared a little better but, again, never managing to gain the lead, although the final score was close. The KBC captain also said it was a goodish performance from his lads away on grass against a good team.

BOVEY TRACEY

BOVEY TRACEY's men continued their run of poor results in the Mid Devon League with defeat at home against Newton Abbot.

An encouraging performance from the Over 55s Y team saw them defeat a strong Kingsteignton team to gain a valuable eight points to their opponents' nil. A Chew, A Cromwell, R Bailey 19-15; D Cosway, S Perry, A Franklin 21-14.

Bovey visited Brixham St Mary's in the ladies' South Devon League and secured a good win by two rinks to one on a challenging green. R Young, S Breame, S Johnson 17-12; Y Stanford, D Simpson, K Callard 8-25; S Davies, C Towle, H Call 27-9. Eight league points to Bovey, two to Brixham.

ABBROOK PARK

ABBROOK Park’s men carry on with their success both in the MDL and in the Bowls Devon competitions.

In the MDL, the men's "A" team are riding high at the top of Division One where they look good to bounce straight back into the Premier Division after their relegation last season. The "B" team are doing well in Division Three of the league with an outside chance of promotion.

There are also Abbrook players representing the club in county competitions.

Jeff and Lin Sharland are through to the mixed pairs Devon Bowl minors sectional final and with Kev Taylor, they are also in the section final of the Burma Star Mixed Triples.

Jeff and Kev are flying the Abbrook flag again as they head to a county quartet final plus Nigel Coombes and Dave Woods are in the Unbadged men’s pairs section final.

Abbrook played the section final of the team county trophy on Sunday against Dawlish Marina with Marina having the home advantage on their unique green. It was always going to be a tough game with both sides closely matched.

Phil Irish, Alan Sanders, Jeff Sharland & Kev Taylor were locked in a very tight match with the scores close for the first eighteen ends where the scores stood at 13 shots each. Abbrook took two of the last three ends with four shots gained in each to run out winners. 21-14 win.

Ron Milne, Nigel Coombes, Andrew Wilkinson & Tom Archer did not have a good game with the scores at 11 shots to 22 after eighteen ends. Things were not looking good for the rink and across the overall scores at this point. Abbrook's four then used all their years of experience and battled back. They picked up 10 shots in the last three ends and got within a single shot of Marina. Lost 21 to 22.

Phil Lannon, Phil Stanley, Jim Coker & Norrie Wilson had a good start in their match. Marina then found their feet and pegged it back and after fifteen ends Abbrook were behind by 12 shots to 14. The last third of their match did not go much better. Lost 14 shots to 20.

John Berry, Tony Sandelance, Dave Woods & Rob Horrell had a great start against a strong Marina rink.

This put them on the front foot and Marina never took the lead but managed to level the scores at 20 shots a piece after 20 ends.

All the other rinks had now finished with one end to play on this one. The scores across the board had both teams level and so the game was a one-end shot-out. Abbrook took this end by a single shot without having to play the very last bowl.

A massive well done to all the team and they now travel to Topsham next Sunday to play the County quarter final.
