NEWTON Abbot Bowls Club women, in their second SDL game of the season, recorded a home win against Paignton 6-4 and this was followed up with an away win at Starcross 8-2.

In the Women's Devon South Champion of Champions, Catherine Pickett beat Helen Lannon of Abbrook Park 22-10 and will now face Sophie Tolchard.

The men’s B-Team lost their opening game 12-2 at home to Brixham St Marys A whilst the C-Team were defeated 10-4 by Brixham St Marys B and then lost 12-2 at Marldon B. It should be noted that the C-Team, in most games, will be playing other club’s B or A teams.

In recent county competitions, the majority of members have achieved wins. In the Section 5 Burma Star Triples, Jane Otieno, Ian Swaffield and Steve Tipping turned around a large shot deficit to win away at Bovey Tracey, against H Call, S Johnson and A Walding. In the same competition, Russell Smithers, Paul Osborn and Julia Barnes won at Bitton Park.

Paul Osborn also won away against R.Landberger in the men's Minors Over 60s Singles.

Onto the Unbadged pairs and there were victories for Carlos Cruise & Max Dick and Simon Boyce & Russell Smithers, overcoming pairs from Bitton Park and Shaldon respectively.

In the Major Championships Senior Fours, Simon Boyce, Chris Hallwood, Paul Osborn and Steve Doyle beat a quartet from Bitton.

Newton Abbot’s Catherine Pickett, Brian Waitman, Dave Pickett and a guest Adrian, from Plymouth Sir Francis Drake, played a recent Patron’s Match at Paignton- many thanks to Adrian for making up the rink.

Finally, Newton Abbot welcomed a touring team from Swindon Rodbourne Cheney who, due to Bank Holiday weekend traffic, arrived an hour and a quarter after expected but they were still able to just about get a full game in, in good spirits.
