Junior player Alexis Lopez won Dainton Park's Abbot Chalice by seven shots at the weekend.
Lopez, who was playing in the Devon Amateur Championship at Teignmouth on Friday and failed to make the cut, only managed to get a tee time in the Abbot Chalice thanks to a last minute cancellation.
The format stayed the same as in previous years. Everyone plays on the Saturday and top 30 plus ties go through to the Sunday.
After day one there were three players tied for the lead on 40 points.
Phillip Seeberg, playing off 14, was in first place thanks to his back nine of 24 points, helped along by a birdie on the par four 13th.
In second place was 15-handicapper Matt Porosa, who also had a back nine of 24. Third was Andy Ryland, playing off six. The back nine was clearly the nine to score on the day as Ryland posted 23 points in shooting two-under-par gross.
Fourth, on 39 points, was Zac Killen. Scoring only 15 points going out, he proceeded to make two eagles and two birdies in the last six holes to transform his card.
Fifth Lopez, also on 39 points, mainly due to a two-under gross back nine.
A total of 37 players made it through to the Sunday play, the cut being 33 points.
The players teed off in reverse order on Sunday, with those on 33 points out first and the leaders last.
First to post a score was Dexter Allsworth (h'cap nine) with 39 points, added to his 34 points the day before gave him the clubhouse lead for a while on 72 points.
Toby Strick, playing off 14, scored 37 points to give him second, behind Allsworth on countback.
This pair stood on top of the leader board for a while until Lopez posted 40 points to blow the rest of the field away.
He raced out of the blocks with three birdies in the first holes, only to slow down a bit and have a slightly rough time around the turn.
He then turned on the magic again to post three birdies in a row – on 15, 16 and 17.
Final result: Alexis Lopez 70, Dexter Allsworth 72, Toby Strick 72, Nigel Coles 71, Phil Seeberg 71, Andy Ryland 71.
