Year 11 Newton Abbot College student Tommy D’Cruz triumphed once again at the Welsh Athletics Junior Grand Prix Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at the National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff.
Representing Newton Abbot Athletics Club, D’Cruz posted a new personal best time of 8.59 seconds in the U17s men’s 60m hurdles.
This was the first time D’Cruz has competed in this event, and his time now has him ranked seventh in the UK and sixth in the country for this event in his age category.
Not content with one win, D’Cruz turned his attention to the U17 men’s long jump, securing victory with a leap of 5.63m – beating his nearest opponent by nearly half-a-metre – and securing a ranking of tenth in the UK and eighth in the country.
Said D’Cruz: ‘I am incredibly proud of the wins, but I am not in any way complacent and there is definitely room for improvement.
‘I just want to see how far I can go, and the dream is to get to the World Youth Athletics Championships.’
Jamie Salter, new PE team leader has been astounded at the level of sporting acumen.
‘During my first two weeks at Newton Abbot College I have been blown away by the ability, dedication and enthusiasm of the students, particularly in physical education,’ he said.
‘As a college and PE department, we are extremely proud of Tommy’s continued success and know this has only been achieved through incredible amounts of hard work and dedication.’
