As the Devon Squash League continues, Newton Abbot men’s first team had a free week, though the rest of the squads had no such break but took full advantage with three comprehensive wins and one narrow defeat.
At the top of division four, Newton Fourths maintained their 100 per cent record as they recorded their 11th straight victory, the victims being Okehampton Seconds.
The trip to the north of the moor saw 3-0 wins for Clive Elmore, Kevin Smart and Steve Morrall sandwiched by 3-1 wins at the top and bottom of the order by Jason Williams and Glen Smith.
In the same division, the fifth team played host to Crediton Three, and in the second versus third battle it was the second place mid-Devon team who emerged victorious, 3-2 (15-6).
Newton’s wins came from Rob Muddeman and Lee Manning, while Dan Ville, Vicki Evans and Gary Kellow all lost without reply.
The Glentworth Insurance-sponsored second team were bolstered by the addition of Adam Smart returning on leave to play at one, as his team entertained Torquay Seconds. He successfully overcame Luke Tanner 3-0, a score which was repeated by Dave Brown and James Cooper, beating Alex Wales and Brandon Ball respectively.
Steve Davey won his match against James MacDonald in four, while Dan Gough was taken to five before overcoming Dominic Phillips 3-2.
The 5-0 (20-3) win moves Newton Second away from the relegation zone in division one, while leaving their victims rooted to bottom spot.
In division two, Newton Abbot Thirds moved to within a point of the promotion places as they scored a 4-1 (18-6) win over second-in-the-table Exeter Golf & Country Club Seconds.
Rob Salmon produced some fine squash to win 3-1, a score copied by Matt Whalley and Luke Ruderham. Harry Senior went one better by seeing off his opponent in three.
Top string Richard Bridge suffered the only defeat on the night, losing in four.
Newton Ladies’ first team were also in action, but were only able to field a squad of four as they travelled to Exeter Uni.
Second string Julie Stevens won a close encounter 3-2, but Sue Hember and Lou Vassie lost 3-1, with top string Anne Scott losing in three.
