AN unprecedented 22 people – including three from Bishopsteignton – have appeared in court for alleged abuse of the elderly at care homes in Devon.

Among those before Exeter magistrates on Tuesday were Paul Hewitt, 68, Russell Hewitt, 40, and Emma Turner, 27 – all from Lindridge, Bishopsteignton.

The trio, all senior managers at Atlas Project Ltd, are accused of conspiracy to falsely imprison and ill treat vulnerable adults at their Teignmead home in Bishopsteignton, between January 2010 and December 2011.

The home has since been closed down and bought on the open market by a private buyer.

Police spokesman Det Insp Steve White said:  'This case in unique in terms of the number of suspects, the complex needs of the victims and the volume of investigation material.'

He added: 'It has and continues to involve many partners and agencies – and we will all continue to work together to support those affected as this judicial process continues.'

The charges against all 22 relate to allegations surrounding the treatment of 11 residents at three care homes run by Atlas – Veilstone in Bideford, Gatooma in Holsworthy and Teignmead.

The other 19 who appeared were connected with the two homes in north Devon.

All 22 who appeared in court were bailed to appear at Exeter Crown Court on November 21.
