Tactical voting has hit the chances of the minority parties putting in a good show according to the Greens in Central Devon.

Candidate Colin Matthews said while it was still too early to say what the final result would be, he was in a no doubt who the front runners were.

'It's a two-horse race between the two big parties,' he said, confirming the fight was between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

'The call for tactical voting has hit the smaller parties.' Mr Matthews said he had stood so that those who wanted to vote green could do so.

'We've got a full slate across Devon and almost the entire south west,' he said.

Speaking about the result in Torbay where the BNP polled approximately twice that of the Greens he said: 'I'm almost speechless, it's crazy.'

Acting returning officer David Incoll confirmed a turnout in Central Devon of 76 per cent with 53,959 votes cast.
