A banned customer has admitted returning to a club while armed with a fire extinguisher safety ring which he used as a makeshift knuckle duster.

Liam Hill, aged 22, of Kingsway, Teignmouth, changed his plea on the first day of his trial at Exeter Crown Court.

He had previously pleaded not guilty to having a safety pin from a fire extinguisher as an offensive weapon. He also admitted using threatening behaviour at Retro’s club in Northumberland Place, Teignmouth, on January 14 this year.

He was found with the makeshift weapon in his pocket when police were called by door staff who had refused him entry.

Hill was banned from Retro’s after being found with a lock knife which was found at the club on New Year’s Eve. He has also admitted having the knife in a public place.

Recorder Mr Peter Towler adjourned sentence and ordered a probation report which may suggest options other than immediate custody.

Mr William Parkhill, defending, said there were issues about Hill’s mental health which may be relevant to his sentence.

He said: ’These are items he picked up with a view to defending himself against people who have a background of serious violence.

’He did not use the fire extinguisher pin to threaten door staff. It does not form part of the public order offence but it was found on his arrest.’
