IT all kicked off for Ashburton’s firefighters on Saturday just as the final whistle was blown on England’s successful World Cup tussle with Sweden.

The town crew was called to three separate shouts just after 5.30pm – a tractor blaze, a barbecue accident and a collapsed teenage girl.

Their hectic rush started with the burning tractor in a field near the River Dart Country Park.

Two jets were used to stop the flames spreading to a nearby shed at Horsehill Farm.

The cause was deemed accidental.

Firefighters returned to base only to be called away again to the town’s swimming pool where a gas barbecue had ovcr-cooked itself.

The offending appliance was drowned in a bin of water to extinguish the hazard.

On their return from the drama, the crew came across an 18-year-old girl found in a collapsed state in St Lawrence Lane.

She was given first aid before a family member arrived to take her home.

It’s understood her poor state was drink-related.
