A CAR was destroyed in a fire despite the best efforts of a Chagford crew to save it.

The vehicle was well alight when firefighters arrived at the scene near Whiddon Down Services off the A30.

The 999 call was received just before 4pm on Friday.

A compressed air foam jet was used to fight the flames together with a hosereel jet.

A fire spokesman confirmed that the car was destroyed while a nearby section of hedgerow was burnt.

He added that the cause was accidental.
