A BUSY Newton Abbot road was closed during the rush-hour as emergency services dealt with a blazing vehicle on the highway.

The vehicle was destroyed in the fire in Coach Road, as was a section of hedgerow nearby.

Police were called to close the road and re-direct traffic while a fire crew from the town, wearing breathing gear, used three jets to extinguish the flames.

A fire spokesman said the late Friday afternoon incident was being treated as accidental.

The alarm was raised just before 4.30pm.
