A MAN was arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving after a car crashed in The Avenue, Newton Abbot, early yesterday.

All three emergency services were called to deal with the incident which involved a Honda Civic hitting an illuminated bollard just after 5am.

The driver was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Torbay Hospital for a further check-up. Firefighters from Newton Abbot made the car safe.

No other vehilces were involved.

Police confirmed a 28-year-old man from Totnes was arrested in connection with the incident.

He was bailed pending further inquiries.
