TWO people were hurt when their car hit a telegraph pole and brought down a high voltage power cable in Kingskerswell late on Tuesday night.

Both casualties, an 18-year-old male driver and a woman passenger, were taken by ambulance to Torbay Hospital for treatment to minor injuries after their Vauxhall Corsa flipped over on to its roof.

The young man suffered a shoulder injury while his passenger received a facial injury.

All three emergency services attended the incident near Coventry Farm on Torquay Road just before midnight.

Workmen from Western Power were called to fix the downed cable - a job which left the road closed for more than six hours with traffic re-routed.

A recovery team was called to right the vehicle. Firefighters made the vehicle and the immediate area safe while the power line was attended to.

A police spokesman said afterwards that an 18-year-old man had later been arrested for allegedly failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis.

He was detained at Torquay Police Station after being discharged from Torbay Hospital.
