A 4x4 vehicle crashed off the Newton Abbot to Totnes road and down an embankment this morning.
It’s thought the male driver may have been taken unwell at the wheel of the vehicle when it went out of control near the railway bridge on the A381 at 11.30am.
Two fire crews from Newton Abbot with a specialist rescue appliance from Exeter were at the scene to recover the overturned car and the motorist trapped inside.
Paramedics and police were also alerted, as were the crew of the Devon Air Ambulance.
A fire spokesman said at 12.15pm: ‘We understand the vehicle ended up on its roof after crashing through a hedge and plunging about 15ft down an embankment with the driver trapped inside.
‘We have our heavy rescue appliance at the scene where a winch and hydraulic cutting gear is in use to rescue the casualty.’The driver has been airlifted to hospital
