SPONTANEOUS combustion is thought to have caused a fire which destroyed 20 tonnes of scrap wood and pallets in Kingsteignton.

Two fire crews from Newton Abbot dealt with the accidental blaze on private land at Lindridge Hill on Friday afternoon.

Firefighters kept a watching brief on the ‘bonfire’ just in case it spread out of control.

A fire spokesman said sawdust within the heap of wood may have spontaneously combusted.

The crews spent most of the afternoon at the incident, a commitment which meant colleagues from Torquay had to rush to another location in Kingsteignton to rescue a cat up a tree.
