MULIPLE 999 calls to a house fire in Dawlish saw five appliances and specialist units rush to the scene early yesterday evening (Friday June 29)

Initally two fire engines from Dawlish and Teignmouth were mobilised to reports of a fire within a house on Coryton Close just before 6.30pm.

Due to the amount of calls received fire control decided to send a further fire engine from Teignmouth along with the aerial ladder platform from Danes Castle, Exeter.

On arrival crews requested a further 2 fire engines to attend and one pump from Torquay, who were en route to standby at Dawlish, and Newton Abbot were deployed, plus the command support vehicle from Totnes and a water bowser from Torquay.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The first crews on arrival confirmed the roof to be well alight got to work with two hose reel jets, one main jet to try and extinguish the fire. “

“The building involved was a detached bungalow with a pitched roof with the fire being located in the roof space. “

“In total crews used one main jet, three hose reel jets, four sets of breathing apparatus, thermal image camera, triple extension ladder and small tools to fight the fire. The aerial ladder platform was used to assist in stripping roof tiles and damping down.”

One male was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and the cause of the fire was accidental.
