A Channings Wood prisoner has been ordered to serve an extra 14 months after being found with two mobile phones and drugs.

Kirk Persence was searched by officers at Channings Wood, near Newton Abbot, because he was seen acting furtively and found with cannabis, testosterone, and the mobiles.

He claimed he was bullied into transferring them from the industries area to an unnamed inmate to pay off a tobacco debt of £65.

Persence, aged 37, of Bournemouth, admitted possession of class B and C drugs with intent to supply and possession of contraband items in prison.

He was jailed for 14 months by Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, at Exeter Crown Court. The sentence will follow his current five-year term imposed in 2015 for drug offences in Bournemouth.

The judge told him: ’All serving prisoners understand if they are caught in possession of drugs or mobile phones they will receive a consecutive prison sentence.’

Miss Anita Noerr, prosecuting, said officers spotted suspicious activity between prisoners on the morning of November 22 last year and found the items in a carrier bag inside Persence’s clothing.

He told them he had been required by another inmate, who he would not name, to move the bag from the industries area to the cells. He thought it contained the so-called legal high Spice.

There was 174 grams of cannabis, 59.2 millilitres of testosterone in six ampoules, and some other tablets which are also used in body building. The two mini-sized phones were black and silver.

Mr William Parkhill, mitigating, said Persence had built up a £65 debt within prison and was given the option of transporting the items or being beaten up.

He said: ’He was nowhere near the top of the hierarchy and nowhere near having the resources to have these items brought into prison. There are people who do, and they use people like my client to take the risks for them.
