FIRE crews from Newton Abbot, Torquay and Paignton were called to a fire in a flat that started in a paper bin.

Fire control received a call reporting a fire in a flat in Burridge Lane, Torquay, yesterday morning (Thursday).

A spokesperson said: ‘Fire crews from Torquay, Paignton and Newton Abbot were quickly mobilised to the scene and confirmed the fire was involving a waste paper bin.

‘One elderly gentleman was rescued by fire crews. Ambulance also attended the scene.

‘Crews extinguished the fire using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one safety jet, and one positive pressure ventilation fan. The fire is believed to be accidental.’
