SIX people were injured in a two-car road smash at Dunsford early today.

Four of the casualties were taken by ambulance to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital at Wonford for treatment.

Two of those hurt – both males - suffered more serious injuries.

A police spokesman confirmed later that neither had suffered life-threatening injuries.

The accident - at Steps Bridge just before 1am - involved an Exeter-registered silver VW Polo and a blue Ford Ka from Wolverhampton.

A BT telegraph pole suffered extensive damage at the scene where a cable was brought down. BT workers dealt with the damage.

Highways workers were also called to clear spilled oil from the road.

It was initially reported that the bridge had suffered substantial damage - but

this was not found to be the case after a detailed inspection.

All three emergency services responded to 999 calls at 12.50am, including two ambulances and two fire appliances from Exeter and Moretonhampstead.

All six people were reported clear of the vehicles when the emergency teams arrived.

Two of the casualties were treated at the location and did not require a trip to hospital.

An ambulance spokesman said those hurt suffered back, head, chest and arm injuries.

Both vehicles involved had to be recovered.
