A MOTORIST escaped unhurt when his car was hit by a hay bale which fell from a lorry on the A38 at Ashburton.

Diversions were set up around the town while police cleared the crash scene.

The accident happened just after 3pm on Tuesday, forcing the closure of the road for half-an-hour.

Police confirmed the driver of a white BMW from Plymouth was unhurt.

No other vehicles were involved.
