MINDLESS criminals have defaced a recently refurbished historical building in the heart of Newton Abbot.
A group of hard-working volunteers spent many hours brightening up and painting the town’s air raid shelter in Courtenay Park last month.
But a bunch of moronic yobs have ruined their community project by plastering the shelter with graffiti.
Volunteers are revamping the historic World War Two hub in hope of opening its doors to members of the public.
Schoolchildren and local groups will be able to visit the shelter and learn about what effect the war had on Newton Abbot residents.
A shelter spokesman told the offenders: ‘We are sorry to disappoint, but we can assure you that we are a group who love painting and we have plenty more paint for go over your display and we shall do it as soon as possible.
‘For every time we graffiti our building we will come back and paint over it.’
He added: ‘We are sure that if the vandals were lucky enough to have grandparents in World War Two they would be extremely proud to think that their grandchildren have gone to great lengths to display their “artwork” on a building that would’ve been used to shelter the public during Newton Abbot’s bombing raids.’
