A MAN from Kingsteignton died after his lorry smashed into the central reservation on the A38’s Marsh Mills flyover outside Plymouth.
The 62-year-old driver, who has not been named, was heading eastwards when his Iveco flatbed lorry suddenly lost control and crashed into safety barriers.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident which happened just before 9am yesterday.
Both busy carriageways were closed by police as the emergency services dealt with the incident, including the arrival of the Devon Air Ambulance and a land vehicle.
The casualty, the only occupant of the lorry, was rushed by the land ambulance to Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Next of kin have been informed, as has South Devon coroner Ian Arrow who is likely to open an inquest within the next few days to admit formal evidence of identity.
A full inquest is expected later in the year.
A police spokesman said: ‘The road remained closed as highways staff made the necessary repairs to the damaged central reservation barrier.’
He added that the road was re-opened six hours later.
Road accident investigators are anxious to hear from any motorists who may have caught the lorry on their dashcams near or at the scene of the incident.
