A MAN was found dead at the scene of a flat fire in Buckfastleigh this morning (Thursday).

Three fire engines from Buckfastleigh, Ashburton and Totnes were sent to reports of the flat fire in Bossell Road, Buckfastleigh, at around 5.30am.

On arrival crews used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one safety jet to tackle the blaze.

A police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called to assist the fire service with a fire at a property on Bossell Road, Buckfastleigh, this morning at around 7am.

‘A man was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next-of-kin has been informed. 

‘Inquiries into the circumstances of how the fire started are being conducted.

‘Police are not treating the incident as suspicious at this time and the file will be prepared for HM Coroner.’

Occupants of the flats were evacuated form the building.

A spokesperson for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Crews confirmed the fire to be on the first floor and increased breathing apparatus to six wearers, whilst occupants of the flats were evacuated from the building.

‘Crews remain on scene at this time and are currently ventilating the property using positive pressure ventilation fans.

‘Police and ambulance services were also informed and were in attendance at this incident.’
