A MAN was detained after a fake £20 note scam warning was flashed around Newton Abbot today (Tuesday).

The alarm was raised at Boots, Courtenay Street, after a dud Scottish note was allegedly proffered.

Newton Abbot Security Trust staff responded and tracked a suspect who had called in at several town centre stores.

A trust spokesman said a man was detained in Fairfield Terrace after police were called in. ‘It was extremely good team work which ended with the arrest,’ he said.

It is understood the counterfeit note scam included deception attempts at the Warren Bakery and Burger King as well as Boots.

A quantity of fake notes was recovered from near the arrest scene just after 11am this morning.

A police spokesman confirmed that a 22-year-old man from Cardiff was detained outside the Saracen’s Head pub.

The man was arrested on suspicion of possessing counterfeit notes. He was taken away for questioning.
