A YOUNG man suffered a head injury in an unprovoked attack in Newton Abbot at the weekend.

The 20-year-old was taken by ambulance to Torbay Hospital after the mystery assault in Market Street.

Police say the offender struck between 1.50am and 2.50am on Saturday when he approached the unsuspecting victim from behind.

A police spokeswoman said: ‘For reasons unknown the young man was punched to the head several times, suffering minor injuries.’

She added that the offence was being treated an assault causing actual bodily harm. It is not thought the two parties knew each other.

Inquiries to trace the culprit were continuing, she added.
