A man already serving a jail term at Channings Wood prison for an unrelated offence has been jailed for having sex with his 15-year-old girlfriend when he was aged 21.

Ross Wyborn befriended the girl in Barnstaple and had sex with her at her home with the knowledge of her parents.

He wrote her love letters and gave her small gifts and the relationship carried on for a short time before Wyborn was sent to jail in December 2016 for unrelated offences of burglary.

Wyborn, now aged 23, who is currently serving his previous sentence at Channings Wood Prison near Newton Abbot, admitted two counts of sexual activity with a child.

He was jailed for two years and four months by Judge Erik Salomonsen at Exeter Crown Court, who also made a sexual harm prevention order which will restrict Wyborn’s access to children after his release.

He told him: ‘You knew what you were doing and knew you should not be doing it but you continued none the less.’

Mr David Sapiecha, prosecuting, said there were elements of grooming because Wyborn gave the girl presents and wrote her at least one letter.

Mr Richard Crabb, defending, said there had been a two-way relationship, the sex had been utterly consensual, and the difference in age was far less than in many cases of this sort.

Wyborn was jailed in 2016 after he was caught on a householder’s security camera inside their home in Salem Street, Barnstaple in September of that year.
