A MAN suffered serious injuries after his car smashed into a wall and rolled over on the Teignmouth road at Bishopsteignton early today.

The casualty, in his late 30s and thought to be from the Birmingham area, was said to have suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident between Cockhaven Road and Forder Lane just before 1am.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene which was sealed off throughout the night before re-opening at 9.30am.

Police say no other vehicles were involved in the incident which involved a small, three-door Suzuki car which ended up on its roof.

It’s understood the car may have clipped a kerb, lost control and smashed into the wall before bouncing off and flipping on to its roof.

The badly injured motorist was released from his vehicle at about 1.30am by firefighters using hydraulic cutting gear.

Two fire crews from Teignmouth attended the incident.

The casual was unconscious at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Torbay Hospital and later to Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital.

His details have not yet been released.

The incident caused major traffic hold-ups.

One witness of the aftermath said: ‘It was a scene of carnage with lots of emergency vehicles around.

‘There was a fair bit of discarded medical equipment strewn across the road which was quite sad to see.’
