TWO men were arrested on suspicion of grievous assault after violence kicked off in Newton Abbot over the weekend.

Police and paramedics were called to the Market Street area after a dozen people were involved in a free-for-all in the early hours of yesterday (Sunday, March 5).

A 40-year-old man from Hampshire suffered head injuries after allegedly being knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked. He was taken by ambulance at 1am to Torbay Hospital for treatment to a swollen right eye and a suspected broken nose.

A police spokesman confirmed that two young men from Newton Abbot, aged 18 and 20, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. They were quizzed and later released on police bail pending further inquiries.

They were ordered to answer their bail on March 24.
