NEW Year’s Eve marked the end of a long career for one Newton Abbot firefighter.

Colleagues atNewton Abbot Fire Station bid farewell to Mark Leaman, ‘one of the staple characters’ at the station.

After 17 years Mark has decided that now is the time to hang up his helmet for the final time.

A spokesman said: ‘Mark and his infectious laugh, as well as his boundless sense of humour will be sorely missed.’

‘He’s been a massive part of our station and he will leave a huge pair of boots to fill following his retirement

Some of Mark’s personal highlights range from the Clarence hotel fire in Exeter, as well as being involved in a rescue where an intoxicated lady was stuck in her window following an eventful evening out.

He also recalls a flooding incident where after mlosing his footing heended up going for a swim in fast flowing water before being caught by some more of his colleagues.

Mark was presented with a chrome axe, details of his time served engraved on a brass tally mounted on a shield, other farewell gifts and a photo album, filled with pictures of his time at Newton Abbot.

Firefighting must run in the family as both Mark’s brother Scott and Mark’s son Jordan worked alongside him at Newton Abbot.

Scott proudly said: ‘You will be greatly missed by all at Newton and many others in the wider service.

‘As your son I’m extremely proud of you and your achievements and you have been a brilliant role model throughout. Cheers dad, it’s been a great laugh, but for now… party’s over!’
