TWO men were detained by British Transport Police at Newton Abbot’s railway station over the weekend.

BTP officers called for back-up from their Devon and Cornwall Police colleagues as they dealt with the pair of suspects on Saturday night.

Captor spray was used to detain one of the men after a struggle.

The alarm was raised at 9pm with a further call for help an hour later.

One witness said afterwards: ‘There was a riot van outside the station. I saw about 10 police officers running towards the track at about 10.15pm. Lots of railway staff were about.’

A BTP spokeswoman confirmed that two men, aged 25 and 53 and from Plymouth, were arrested.

The younger man was charged with trespassing on the railway and being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

The other was charged with being drunk.

Both are due to appear before magistrates in Torquay on April 5.
