A POLICE search extended to Chudleigh after a locally-registered car was abandoned at the scene of a crash on the edge of Torquay.

Officers are continuing their inquiries in the wake of the single-vehicle accident on the Torquay-bound carriageway of Hellevoetsluis Way early on Sunday.

A Vauxhall Vectra smashed into the central reservation, knocking a concrete pillar away from the stanchion. Glass and vehicle debris was strewn across the road but when the emergency services arrived there was no sign of any casualties.

A police helicopter search of the area drew a blank as did inquiries at nearby hospitals.

The accident happened about 12.30am on Sunday. Highways staff were called to clear the crash mess which included spilled petrol.

Firefighters from Torquay and Paignton attended the location to make the silver vehicle safe.

A fire spokesman said: ‘No casualties were discovered and the driver was believed to have fled the scene.’

A police spokesman confirmed that inquiries were being made to trace the registered keeper of the vehicle. Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting log 34 of November 15.
