A psychiatric patient has been remanded in custody after being found with two razor blades in Teignmouth.
Martin Fox-Cooper called the police on July 16 as a cry for help after failing to contact the mental health crisis team and being kept on hold for more than an hour,.
He was already on bail for a similar incident in Newton Abbot in which he called the police to tell them he had gone to the all-night Tesco store in Kingsteignton to buy a knife.
Fox-Cooper, aged 44, of Longford Lane, Kingsteignton, admitted a fresh count of possession of a bladed article when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court.
He had previously admitted an identical charge and his sentence had been deferred for a psychiatric report.
Judge Peter Johnson adjourned both cases and ordered a full psychiatric report, which will be prepared while Fox-Cooper is in custody.
He said: ‘The position seems to be worsening. It is important for the protection of the public and of the defendant that he is kept in a custodial environment.’
Miss Emily Pitts, defending, said Fox-Cooper has been in custody since his arrest in Teignmouth and is not coping. He has self-harmed and is on suicide watch.
The only person who was at any risk of harm during both incidents was Fox-Cooper himself, and his possession of the knife and razor blades was a cry for help.
She said: ‘It is important that he gets the care he so desperately needs and has a psychiatric assessment.
‘In the first offence he called the mental health crisis team and was on hold for over an hour. He then called the police.’
Fox-Cooper has a history of carrying knives dating back more than 20 years and remains at risk of being sent to jail under new laws designed to crack down on inner city violence.
An earlier hearing was told that Fox-Cooper called the police from Newton Abbot bus station at 11 pm saying he was having a mental health crisis and planned to buy a knife to harm himself or someone else.
Officers guessed that the only shop open at that time was Tesco and intercepted him as he left with the £7 black handled knife, which had a 8.8 cm blade, in his bag.
