A cargo ship coming into Teignmouth this afternoon (Wednesday December 31) has run aground in the estuary.
The Scot Pioneer is the second vessel that has been grounded on the approach to the ABP Port of Teignmouth this year.
She was scheduled to arrive on this afternoon’s high tide following the arrival of the Arklow Crest, which successfully berthed at around 14.40. High tide was at 15.07.
It is not yet clear whether the Scot Pioneer ran into trouble due to a slightly lower high tide as a result of atmospheric pressure or a mechanical failure.
It is likely she will remain in mouth of the River Teign until the next high tide at around 4am tomorrow morning. The ship’s crew will now have to watch new year’s celebrations from the river mouth rather than enjoy shore leave.
Both the Scot Pioneer and Arklow Crest were anchored in Lyme Bay over the last few days as weather conditions prevented them entering the port.
Earlier this year, the cargo vessel Scot Bay was grounded on the approach to the ABP Port of Teignmouth.
