A troubled teenager stabbed his next door neighbour after throwing a rock star style tantrum in which he smashed his electric guitar.

Cannabis user Connor Beasley got into an argument with his neighbour when he complained about his behaviour and armed himself with a knife.

Victim Graham Chetwynd suffered a slash wound to his shoulder during the encounter at his home in Buckfastleigh, Exeter Crown Court was told.

Beasley was just 17 at the time and was suffering from emotional problems as a result of a family tragedy in which two young cousins were killed in a fire.

His condition was aggravated by his heavy use of cannabis in the two years before the attack.

Beasley, now aged 19, of Fore Street, Exeter, admitted wounding and possession of an offensive weapon and was jailed for six months, suspended for two years and ordered to receive supervision by Judge Erik Salomonsen.

He told him: "I have to bear in mind your age at the time of this incident. You lost control of yourself at your home and smashed your guitar and threatened to smash your amplifier.

"You went next door where there was an altercation and you went back home to fetch a knife from the kitchen which you used to wound Mr Chetwynd.

"I have seen the photographs of the injury and this was clearly a serious offence. I have heard you have suffered psychiatric problems and made one visit to hospital.

"This sentence is designed to ensure you do not offend again."

Mr Gareth Evans, prosecuting, said Mr Chetwynd suffered wounds to his shoulder caused by being slashed by the kitchen knife during the incident in November 2014, when Beasley was 17.

Kelly Scrivener, mitigating, said Beasley has already spent 15 months on a tagged curfew and has turned his life around by starting an apprenticeship at a vegetable shop.

She said he is currently living in unsatisfactory accommodation but hopes to move into a home with his girlfriend in the near future. He has stayed out of trouble and taken steps to address his cannabis abuse.
