Fire crews were sent to a propery in Ilsington just before ten o’clock last night after reports of a chimney fire.

A crew from Ashburton was first on the scene as Sigford Cottages where they confirmed there was a chimney fire involving a wood burner and got to work using chimney gear and a thermal imaging camera. Another fire engine was requested to attend for additional crew power and this was sent from Bovey Tracey.

A fire service spokesman said: " Shortly after requesting the second pump the crew then requested the attendance of the aerial ladder platform from Torquay. This was due to them needing to access and fight the chimney fire from the chimney stack.

"The crews finally extinguished the fire with two firefighters on the aerial ladder platform hose reel jets and chimney gear from the chimney stack and an additional hose reel jet inside the property as a precaution in the loft space and a thermal imaging camera."

A revisit has been planned for the morning for crews to ensure it has not reignited at all.
