FIREFIGHTERS from Teignbridge dealt with two vehicle fires earlier today (Saturday, February 27).

Both fire appliances from Newton Abbot fire station were mobilised to reports of a vehicle on fire on the A380 carriageway on approach to Penn Inn in the late afternoon.

On arrival crews discovered the car to be well alight with smoke and flames issuing from the passenger and engine compartment. Fortunately the occupants had escaped the vehicle prior to the fire service’s arrival.

The fire was extinguished with two firefighters in breathing apparatus using a hose reel jet. Their colleagues used fast road coning equipment to close one lane of the carriageway to provide the crews tackling the fire with some added protection.

Responsibility of the incident was passed to the police.

At just after 6pm Ashburton firefighters responded to reports of a car on fire in Roborough Lane.

Arriving at the scene the crew confirmed a small fire within the vehicle and got to work using one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

The interior of the car was 50 per cent damaged by fire and smoke and the incident was left in the hands of the police.
