UNSETTLED weather did little to dampen the spirits in Newton Abbot this past weekend as residents gathered for the crowning of the carnival queen.
The traditional ceremony, which took place on Saturday, June 25 at St Leonards clock tower, saw Miss Elysia East, who was surrounded by her attendants: Carla East, Marcus East, Katie Last and Daniel Last. take the reigns from previous incumbent Miss Emily Last who had been queen since 2019.
Newly crowned Elysia was then presented with bunches of flowers from various townsfolk, including but not lmited to: Mrs Helen Rowe, Cllr Ann Jones, Town Development Manager Sally Henelly, Mia Roberts and Olivia and India Bunday.
With the ceremony coming to a close, Mayor Cllr Carol Bunday, who is also deputy chairman of Newton Abbot Carnival, took the flowers to Southlands Residential Care Home for the residents to enjoy.
Newton Abbot carnival week begins on July 2 and concludes with a procession through the town on July 9.
