Bovey Tracey Macmillan Cancer Support volunteer Kelly Hayman Bruce has received the top national award given by the charity. She was presented with the Richard Hambro Award by Calvin Lovelock, Macmillan fundraising manager for Devon, earlier this week. Ms Hayman-Bruce has been fundraising for the good cause for ten years. With her strong leadership and commitment, the Bovey Tracey and district volunteer group has raised £85,000 thanks to her team's fundraising efforts. 'I can't believe I was nominated and received this award,' said Ms Hayman-Bruce. 'I started off as a volunteer and the work I have done has grown beyond expectation.' She dedicates a lot of her time to the cause. 'Every week I organise an event for Macmillan and it takes time to arrange these fundraisers but I really enjoy it,' she said. 'I keep volunteering as the charity is something I believe strongly in. I get spurred on the more money we raise. It is my way of doing a good turn.' She originally decided to help out with fundraising after her friend's husband was diagnosed with cancer. Due to the good work the charity does, she has never looked back. Despite the credit crunch, Ms Hayman-Bruce said people are being generous. 'People are incredibly giving,' she said. Mr Lovelock was thrilled that she received the prestigious award – which includes a certificate and medal. 'She is a pillar of the Macmillan community and without her we would have to rewrite our funding strategies,' he said. 'Kelly not only raises funds, but she also raises awareness of the charity and the support it offers. She is a driving force.' l Macmillan coffee morning fundraisers page 4
