A CAMPAIGN has been launched to deal with Ashburton’s growing spread of street-cluttering advertising boards.

Some 24 town centre businesses have been named and shamed by one resident who claims the profusion of signs is a health and safety risk.

June Wood has written to the town council listing transgressors in East Street, North Street, West Street, St Lawrence Lane and Kingsbridge Lane.

She identified 11 alleged offenders in East Street, six in North Street, three apiece in West Street and Kingsbridge Lane and a lone advertiser in St Lawrence Lane.

Copies of her letter of grievance have also been fired off to Teignbridge Council in Newton Abbot and Dartmoor National Park Authority at Bovey Tracey.

Mrs Wood says the saturation of signs is ‘causing great concern to many people.’

‘It is becoming dangerous to walk on most parts of Ashburton’s pavements for the elderly, children, parents with prams, wheelchairs and walking aids,’ she complained.

She added: ‘It is also a health and safety issue. I have listed most of the premises involved. I am speaking not just for myself but for all people who are at risk.’

The contents of Mrs Wood’s letter were noted by members of the town council at their monthly meeting on Tuesday.

No comment on its contents were made, but the council agreed to discuss the issue in detail at their next general purposes committee meeting.
