Cllr HENRY COLE, of Newton Abbot, writes:

On the question of the Newton Abbot flag was one of the councillors who were not for it because it has a lot of around Newton in it; the green is for the moors, the black for the granite and the white for clay.

Now for the tower – Newton Abbot is known by it.

The cross roads, as they call it, are right because that was the first in Newton years ago.

One was for Exeter and London, one to Bovey and the moors, one to Totnes and Plymouth and one to Torquay and Brixham.

Many years ago it was the centre for Newton market, so that is what it is all about.
