A Coombeshead College student has proved himself to be on the ball not only on the rugby pitch but in the business world, too.

Alex Gale is the 14-year-old captain of the Newton Abbot college's under-15 rugby squad.

The team has topped the South Devon XV league three years on the trot.

Now, thanks to Alex's negotiation skills, it has gained the support of the business community, too.

Sports teacher Andy Balsdon set his youngsters the challenge of finding a way to fund new team shirts.

First to crack the problem was Alex.

He arranged talks with two firms, one belonging to dad Andrew Gale, and the net result was sponsorship worth £600.

'It's absolutely brilliant and has given the team a huge boost,' said Mr Balsdon.

'It's something I've encouraged for some time but without success and then Alex walks in one day and says I've got it.'

The deal with his father's Twelve Oaks Caravan Park, agricultural engineers C R Willcocks and their partners New Holland, means the lads no longer have to fork out for anonymous shirts which they wore for all their school sports.

Instead, each now has a professional rugby top in the team's favoured green and white.

'This may have started with me but it's Alex who deserves a huge pat on the back,' said Mr Balsdon.
