IN full regalia the ale tasters and bread weighers were out in force on Saturday for Ashburton's annual Ale Tasting and Bread Weighing ceremony.

Accompanied by members of the Court Leet and Baron juries and portreeve Jeanne Distin, the party visited the eight public houses and seven bakeries in the town.

At each hostelry they checked the quality of the ale was up to scratch. Each landlord was presented with a certificate and a sprig of evergreen to hang above the entrance. At the bakeries, the bread was weighed and similarly certificates and a sprig of evergreen handed out.
