Last Summer Teignmouth Players took to the stage at the Pavilions auditorium for the first time and hit just the right note with their much acclaimed production of Blackadder II. They followed it up last month with another success – an original and delightful creation of Peter Pan.
It seems that the Players are ‘on a roll’ at this venue as they return this month with a cunning plan to reprise the Blackadder connection with three episodes from Blackadder the Third. These hugely popular scripts, originally for television, are written by Ben Elton and Richard Curtis who generously donate their royalties from this production to Comic Relief.
Many of last year’s cast will be returning to create roles in Sense and Senility, Ink and Incapability and Duel and Duality.
David Warren who has ramped up a number of accolades in theatre festivals and on the local stage, comes straight from growling his way through last month’s Peter Pan as Captain Hook, to play the ever sarcastic butler, Edmund Blackadder and Stephen Day as the Prince Regent. Mr Andy Killen will portray the self effacing dogsbody – Baldrick. Teignmouth’s Amy Burton Smith is directing and has been fortunate to assemble a strong supporting cast which includes a Teignmouth Players’ award winning stalwart Elaine Harvey as Mrs Miggins, the coffee shopkeeper.
Director Amy says: ‘It’s a great challenge bringing the script to life and lifting each character off the page, even greater when the characters are already so well-known and have been portrayed by iconic actors. This production is stretching our talented cast and crew and we are working hard to build on the successes of last year’s team for Blackadder II. I cannot praise everyone’s efforts enough.’
This is just the kind of ensemble production which suits the Pavilions stage well and seems to bring out the best from the Players, as they cope with the additional challenge of working away from their base at the Ice Factory.
Blackadder the Third promises a lot of fun at the Pavilions and takes to the stage from August 23-27 with a Matinee on Saturday.
