THE final event in Newton Abbot's Christmas calendar has been cancelled due to heavy rain.

Organised by Newton Abbot Town Council, the Mayor’s Carol Service had been due to take place tonight, Wednesday, December 17.

However, the town council have decided to cancel ahead of expected heavy rain.

As well as the service, an appearance by Father Christmas, live music, market stalls and other entertainment has been cancelled too.

A spokesperson for the council said: ‘We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

‘We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’.

It should be noted that, shops in town will remain open till 8pm for late night shopping, with free parking in Teignbridge Council car parks from 4pm.
