ASHBURTON’S portreeve has come up with a novel idea to help the town’s food and drink outlets and boost the coffers of local good causes.

Sean Wilson said: ‘I want to do something to support the businesses in our town that have supported their community throughout the pandemic as we all endeavour to get back to normality.’

His idea, called the Portreeve’s Pick campaign, is loosely based on the Veneziana Fund which saved Venice from sinking into the sea.

Sean said: ‘When you choose the “Portreeve’s Pick” from the menu at participating businesses in Ashburton, part of the proceeds are donated to support important local causes.

‘It all adds up so a little goes a long way! Not only will you be supporting a local business– you will be raising funds to help our community.

‘It’s a great way to help the businesses in our town, to enable them to support our community and to enjoy yourself at the same time – everyone wins!’

He explained: ‘Normally the portreeve nominates just one charity, but post-pandemic I realised there were many small charities who needed just a small amount of funding.

‘There are a dozen good causes, which can be seen on the “fundraising” page at www.ashburtonportreeve.info website. They all contribute the the wellbeing of the entire town’

Sean and Ashburton’s master bailiff Karen Turner have been sampling the food at several of the establishments. Karen joked: ‘I’m glad to be doing my bit to help these good causes!’

So far seven businesses have joined the scheme, and the number is still growing. Sean said: ‘We are currently working with a growing list of businesses in Ashburton, keep an eye out for updates, news and social media posts as the offers become available.’
