A MAN from Oban who assaulted a woman in Newton Abbot was given a conditional discharge by South and West Devon Magistrates' Court.

Michael Steven Schofield, aged 42, of Connell Road, Oban, Argyllshire, admitted assaulting the woman by beating her on October 19. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and must pay £100 compensation.

Schofield was also banned from driving for three years and fined £200 for drink-driving. He gave a reading of 62mcgs of alcohol in 100 mls of breath. The legal limit is 35 mcgs.

Three other charges against him were dismissed by the court. He had been charged with failing to stop after an accident, not being covered by insurance or an authorised driving licence. No evidence was offered by the prosecution and the court dismissed all three charges.
