BUDDING bakers in Dawlish are being invited to make a cake fit for the King.

Dawlish Town Council is organising a Coronation Bake Off which will be judged by the town’s Mary Berrys and Paul Hollywoods, otherwise known as the Mayor and Dawlish WI, on Sunday May 7 on the Lawn.

Categories are for different age groups; one for 14 years and over, seven to 13 and under sevens.

Entry is free and cakes can be delivered between 10am and 11am on Sunday before the judging and announcement of the winners at 1.45pm.

Only one entry per person.

For the 14s and over, the cake can be any shape or size but should be made using Mary Berry’s own all-in-one Victoria sponge recipe.

The recipe is readily available online at BBC Food or Great British Bake-Off.

Filling can be raspberry or strawberry jam, and shop bought is allowed, and can include homemade buttercream.

It can be decorated in anyway using royal icing, fondant icing, buttercream and with any decorations.

Judging criteria will be on the taste and bake of the cake, as in true Paul Hollywood style, decoration and the appeal of the cake for a Royal occasion.

For the seven to 13-year-olds, the contest is the make and decorate four Fabulous Fairy Cakes for the Coronation.

For the under sevens, it’s Brilliant Biscuits with children asked to decorate four shop bought digestive or rich tea biscuits.

Winners of each will be presented with their prizes from 1.45pm at the Bandstand.

Entry forms are available from the town council website.
