Ashburton councillor Barbara Nicholl and her family have been so impressed with the staff of Torbay Hospital's Turner Ward that they organised a fundraising bingo evening in aid of the unit. Cllr Nicholl was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia earlier this year and has been receiving treatment since. Now in remission and able to enjoy some time at home, Cllr Nicholl's daughter, Charmaine Croft, and her friend, Debbie Monnington, staged the event in conjunction with Highweek Primary School, Newton Abbot, which shared the proceeds. Handing over a cheque for £303.05 to Sister Angela Jolly on Turner Ward, Cllr Nicholl said: 'This is a way of saying thank you to Turner Ward for everything they've done for me. 'The dedication of the staff and the care they give is beyond belief and I'm just so grateful they've got me through this.' Sister Jolly thanked the fundraisers and said she was delighted to accept the money, which would help provide treats for patients to which the NHS budget could not stretch to. She also described Cllr Nicholl as an inspiration to others faced with the challenge of dealing with cancer.
