FIREFIGHTERS from Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey and Buckfastleigh have joined colleagues from nine stations in battling a large barn fire at Staverton today, Saturday.

Fire Control received multiple calls to reports of a barn on fire near to Staverton shortly before noon.

A spokesperson said: ‘Control mobilised three fire engines and one water carrier which came from Buckfastleigh, Bovey Tracey, Totnes and Danes Castle.

‘Once on scene crews immediately sent an assistance message of ‘Make Pumps 6’ closely followed by a further assistance message of ‘Make Water Bowsers 2’

‘Crews confirmed one barn used mainly as storage measuring 25 metres by 30 metres well alight, crews were using 1 45mm jet and one hose reel jet and were hard at work preventing further fire spread to a nearby property.

‘Crews were still at work using two ground monitors to prevent fire spread and extinguish the fire, currently there is a 25 metre cordon in place due to an unsafe compressor within the barn.

‘Crews confirmed that the barn has been 100% destroyed by fire, crews used 2 x 45m Jets 2 Hose Reel Jets 1 thermal imaging camera and one light portable pump.

By 6.40 this evening, Fire Control reported: ‘Crews are remaining on scene to turn over and damp down this incident.  ‘This was believed to be accidental.’
